I have learned so much from all of the schools I have taught in and most importantly, the students I have worked with...My students have made me the teacher I am today. I like to stay up on current Best Practices so I read a lot and try new things. Please contact me with any comments, questions, or suggestions...I love hearing from parents, students, and other educators!

JANUARY

  • Innovation Station Items Needed!
    Mrs. G has posted a list of items that she will need for the Summit Road Art Fair. Please send in any donations and I will make sure she gets them!
  • 2nd Quarter Standards
    Attached you will find the 2nd Quarter Standards that Team Schappelkins will be assessing. On your child's report card you will only see a "minus" if your child hasn't mastered that standard.
  • 100th Day of School Engineering
    Take a look at what Team Schappelkins' is engineering for the 100th Day of School. Let me know if you have any questions...Can't wait to see the final projects!
  • Class Valentine List
    Although our classroom parties aren't until the 17th of February, I thought some of you would want to get a jump start on making valentines!

    DECEMBER

  • Team Schappelkins' Ornament Sale
    Team Schappelkins continues to show Summit Elementary what it means to be compassionate. We are having an ornament sale December 19-22 and all of our proceeds will be donated to Kelley Phihower, a STEMbot undergoing surgery in February.

    NOVEMBER

  • Summit's "Compassion" Canned Food Drive
    Although we haven't had the assembly, I thought I'd get a jump on things and post the flyer we will be sending home. Please send in any donations over the next few weeks to show our school's compassion!
  • First Quarter Assessed Standards
    There are the standards that will be assessed (1st Quarter) on the Report Card. It's bit different than past markings. You will see a minus sign if there is a concern. A standard left blank is either not assessed at this time or there is no concern!
  • Summit's November Newsletter
    Check out the happenings at Summit STEM! Read a glimpse of our 1st Grade problem-based learning activity!

    OCTOBER

  • Authors at Work
    I will be sending home a special writing folder that your child will be using this year. Please help your child add items that will "SPARK" their writing process. See the attached document for more info!
  • Parent Teacher Conference Form
    Please make sure to send me in your preferred time for Parent-Teacher Conferences. You may e-mail me your time and I will try to meet all requests!
  • Comprehension Newsletter: Schema
    It's taken me a while to get this posted, but this is what's going on inside of our brains! We will be learning the three types of connections over the next few weeks and we will be making a "connection" chain in the ELA...How many connections can we make by the end of the year?

    AUGUST

  • 1st Quarter Problem-Based Rubric
    As we get ready to present our "Top 2 Classroom Pets" to the kindergarteners (because they will have to take care of our pet next year) we will be using this rubric to evaluate our learning.
  • First Quarter Sound Focus Words
    Attached you will find out 1st Quarter Sound Focus Words by week. Please notice that "Challenge Words" are optional!
  • High Frequency Word List
    Attached you will find the K-2 High Frequency Word List that is used to compile the words in our First Grade Sound Focus. Your child should be able to read and write the K-1 words by the end of the year and will be introduced to some of the 2nd grade words as well!

    SEPTEMBER

  • 1st Grade MBSP Letter
    Please make sure to read the MBSP Letter from Team Schappelkins. Let me know if you have any questions! Please remember these are facts your child should be able to do by the end of the year!
  • Miss Appel's Parent Packet
    Eek! I didn't realize that I haven't uploaded this yet! You'll find all of the really important items that are important for you to know.
  • Class Pet Questionnaire
    Please use the "Class Pet Questionnaire" to help us narrow down our search of the best pet for our classroom. We will be using this information to create a graph in the next few days.
  • Team Schappelkins' Sound Focus
    Each week, Team Schappelkins will have a specific sound focus. Please check out the following attachment to read more about it!

    AUGUST

  • Team Schappelkins' Daily Schedule & Star Scientist Schedule
    Please see the attached document for Team Schappelkins' Daily Schedule and for your child's Star Scientist week! This will also be posted at the top of this webpage. I'll let you know of any additions or changes!
  • "Me" Box Letter
    At Open House I will be giving each child a special box which will hold their books they will be reading throughout the school year. Please help your child decorate their own bin and return to school by Friday, September 16th!
  • 1st Day Transportation Tag
    I will be passing out a tag at Open House on August 25th with a clip, but if you lose it, please print this off and attach it to your child's book bag on the first day of school!
  • Book-In-A-Bag
    I will be reading with your child each day (in a small group of 4-5 students). Your child will have a special book baggie they will fill up with reading material to practice at home each night. Please make sure all materials are returned the next school day!
  • Sign and Return Information
    Please fill out and return the 3 documents in the above link back to me as soon as possible!
  • 1st Grade School Supplies
    Some of you have already been asking about the 1st Grade supply list...Here you go! Please only label your child's rainboots and raincoat!
  • Team Schappelkins' First Grade Packet
    Team Schappelkins was glad to see so many parents at Summit's Open House! Attached you will find the information that was handed out...Keep checking for updates!
